As one can tell by the name, the club are from the much disputed region Nagorny Kharabakh. The war between Armenians and Azerbaijani did not only displace the population, but also the club, which mostly play in Sumgait now, a little town near Baku. The club in the exile normally draw 4500 spectators to the home games, but in international matches it can easily be a crowd of 20 000. Nevertheless, Agdam has yet to win a game in a European Competition. Agasalim Mirdzhavadov has been the coach since Azerbaijan's independence in 1992. The former player with Neftchi Baku is also the coach of the Olympic team. Together with the coach today's pillars of the team joined the club, whereas Alim Kurbanov came only a year ago. Their game is based on intensive forechecking in order to stop the opponents' attacks early while starting quickly the counter-attack with the fast strikers Kurbanov and Musvik Guseynov. These tactics help to support the defence which is rather shaky at times. -ba
Wie es der Name sagt, stammt der Verein aus der umkämpften Region Nagorny Karabakh. Durch die Kriegswirren zwischen Armeniern und Aserbaidschanern wurden nicht nur die Einwohner vertrieben, auch der Klub wanderte aus und spielt nun zumeist in Sumgait, einer Kleinstadt unweit von Baku. Im dortigen Exil erscheinen rund 4500 Zuschauer zu den Heimspielen, in UEFA-Wettbewerben können es bis zu 20'000 sein. Trotzdem hat Agdam im Europacup in sechs Spielen noch nie gewonnen. Agasalim Mirdzhavadov ist seit der Eigenständigkeit Aserbaidschans im Jahr 1992 Trainer bei Karabakh Agdam. Der einstige Spieler von Neftchi Baku betreut die Olympia-Auswahl derzeit im Nebenamt. Mit dem Coach stiessen auch die heutigen Leistungsträger zur Mannschaft, einzig Alim Kurbanov kam erst vor Jahresfrist. Die gegnerischen Angriffe werden meist schon früh abgefangen und die schnellen Stürmer Kurbanov und Musvik Guseynov lanciert. Erfolgreiches Forechecking ist auch nötig, denn die Abwehrkräfte sind nicht immer sattelfest. -lb
