League record since 1994: 15, 15, II 4, II 1, 5, (3).
Top players: Victor Borel (25/forward), Eduard Demenkovets (30/center defender/5), Vasiliy Mazur (27/midfielder/1), Serhiy Nykonchuk (UKR/26/forward), Maxim Razumov (22/forward/3), Vladimir Selkin (27/goalkeeper).
Coach: Vyacheslav Akshayev (40).
On May 26, 1998, coach Vyacheslav Akshayev won the cup final with Lokomotiv-96 Vitebsk against Dinamo Minsk (2:1), only to leave the club afterwards for Gomel, with more than 500,000 inhabitants the second largest city of Byelorussia. Only Minsk, the capital, is larger. From Vitebsk he brought goalkeeper Vladimir Selkin, central defender Eduard Demenkovets and striker Maxim Razumov. Today's pillars of the team joined the club only after the Gomel's re-promotion in the winter of 1997. The oilcompany 'Belarusnezt' provided the financial means for the new players. Gomel never made it to the highest league in the Soviet Union. Today's team excel with good physical strength, quickness and a good team spirit. Their 4-4-2-system is similar to that of the French national team of the 1998 World Cup. They try to stop the opponents' attacks in midfield already. The strikers Razumov and Victor Borel are technically very skilled. -ba
-lb
