In May, Spartak Varna were threatened by relegation. They won only one of the last eight games, losing six, but they avoided relegation in the last minute. The coach of the team is Radoslav Zdravkov, who had played 58 games with the national team and had been elected Player of the Year in 1982. Their weakness is the shaky defence, which caused the management to sign the experienced goalkeeper Dimitar Popov in the fall. During the 1994 World Cup in the USA he was goalkeeper number three. Last summer they had to replace top goal scorer Valentin Stanchev, who went to the top team CSKA Sofia. They signed the former U21 player Boiko Velichkov instead, one of the greatest talents in the country. He scored ten goals, coming up to the fans' expectations. Spartak Varna musste im Mai um den Klassenerhalt bangen. Aus den letzten acht Spielen schaute bei sechs Niederlagen nur ein Sieg heraus. Letztlich reichte es doch zum Ligaerhalt. Trainiert wird die Mannschaft von Radoslav Zdravkov, der 58 Länderspiele bestritt und 1982 zum Spieler des Jahres gewählt worden war. Hauptproblem des Teams ist die unsichere Abwehr. Deshalb engagierte Spartak im Herbst mit Dimitar Popov einen international erfahrenen Torwart. Er war bei der Weltmeisterschaft 1994 in den USA als dritter Goalie dabei. Im Angriff galt es im vergangenen Sommer, Topskorer Valentin Stanchev zu ersetzen, der in die Hauptstadt zum Spitzenklub CSKA Sofia wechselte. Als Ersatz verpflichtete der Verein den ehemaligen U21-Nationalspieler Boiko Velichkov, eines der grössten Talente des Landes. Mit zehn Toren hat er die Erwartungen der Anhänger erfüllt. Zusammen mit Anastas Petrov bildet Velichkov ein gefährliches Sturmduo, das vom Spielmacher Nasko Kostadinov wirkungsvoll unterstützt wird. -sw
