In 1776 Varazdin, an industrial and commercial town, was destroyed by a fire, which caused the Croatian state machinery to move to Zagreb. "Little Vienna", as the city is called, was rebuilt in Baroque style. The club depend on the local textile factory: the company's manager Andjelko Herjavec is also the club's president. Due to their excellent youth work Varteks were able to stay in the top league after Croatia's independence. They lost the cup final three times: in 1961 against Vardar Skopje (1961) and in 1996 and 1998 against Zagreb. This spring they were stopped in the quarter final of the Cupwinners' Cup by Mallorca (0:0, 1:3). Coach Drazen Besek, former midfielder with Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), who did not give up playing before last fall, likes the 3-5-2 system. Captain and free kick specialist Mumlek, Karic and Kamberovic are the main goal scorers. Last season Karic, who played with AC Torino in 1996, scored ten goals. The pillars in midfield are Balajic and Muzek. Belajic had his best years with Hajduk Split and Sporting Lisbon, while Muzek played with Salzburg, when they won the Austrian championship in 1994 and reached the final of the UEFA-Cup, losing it to Inter Milan (0:1, 0:1). Defender Sabolcki was one of the leading figures in the U20 selection which participated in the World Cup in Nigeria. -ba

-lb
