Despite their relatively poor league record, West Ham are a club of long tradition in England. They appeared four times in the European Cup-Winners' Cup and reached the quarter final every time. In 1965 they even won it with wins over Gent, Sparta Prag, Lausanne, Saragossa und 1860 Munich. West Ham came to fame through two historical figures: Bobby Moore, who was the captain of the national team, and Geoff Hurst, who scored three goals in the 1966 World Cup final against Germany (4:2), one of which was the infamous third. Even without the means their rivals in London have, West Ham succeeded in bringing out famous players. A few years ago it was Trevor Brooking, and today experts see in Rio Ferdinand the greatest defender talent in decades. Although they conceded many more goals than they scored, West Ham United finished fifth, which made it Harry Redknapp's best result in his fifth year as the coach of the London club. -ba
-lb
