Thanks to president and sponsor Pierre Blayau Stade Rennais are developing into a big club. There seems to be an inexhaustible source of money in the Bretagne, which will help to reach the top of French and European football. Last season, the team of Paul Le Guen played very attractive football, only depending too heavily on the goals by Shabani Nonda from Burundi. He scored a third of all Rennes goals. Zum Sturm an die nationale Spitze und in den europäischen Fussball scheint es in der Bretagne zumindest an den finanziellen Mitteln nicht zu fehlen. Die Equipe von Paul Le Guen spielte letzte Saison einen attraktiven Fussball, im Abschluss war sie jedoch stark von den Leistungen des Burunders Shabani Nonda abhängig. Er erzielte jedes dritte Tor. Im Winter wechselte Christophe Le Roux von Nantes zu den Bretonen. Er verlieh der jungen Mannschaft die fehlende Routine im Zentrum, wo er neben Captain Stéphane Grégoire die zweite Leaderfigur ist. Le Guen, der in der Saison 1997/98 noch 26 Spiele für Paris-St-Germain spielte, ist kein Mann der grossen Worte. In seinem ersten Jahr als Coach verpasste er mit Stade Rennais die Qualifikation zur Champions League nur um vier Punkte. International hat Rennes bisher wenig Erfahrung sammeln können.
