In his first year, the former assistant coach Jean-Louis Gasset finished eighth under difficult circumstances. In the third round Montepllier lost to Marseille 4:5, after having been up 4:0 in half time. Then, they lost both their strikers within a very short time. In the late fall, the powerful Ibrahima Bakayoko (CIV) was transferred to Everton in the Premier League, and on Christmas, Xavier Gravelaine was traded with Nicolas Ouédec from Paris-St-Germain. The move changed the balance in the team. If Gasset's team were renowned for their attack before, they now gained in consistency and defensive stability. The 3:0 in their last game was the first win in their Stade de la Mosson in six months. The boss of the club is Louis Nicollin, an entrepreneur. The founder and today's president of the club not only impresses by his physical presence, but also by his competence: the football school regularly brings forth up and coming players, who are immediately bought up by the big clubs; this spring, it happened with the talented Laurent Robert, who left for Paris at the end of the season. -ba
Der frühere Assistenztrainer Jean-Louis Gasset erreichte in seinem ersten Jahr als Chef unter schwierigen Bedingungen den 8. Rang. In der 3. Runde unterlag Montpellier im Mittelmeer-Duell in Marseille 4:5, nachdem es zur Pause 4:0 geführt hatte. Dann verlor es kurz hintereinander beide Stürmer. Im Spätherbst wechselte der kräftige Ibrahima Bakayoko (CIV) zu Everton in die Premier League, und an Weihnachten kam es zum Tauschgeschäft mit Paris-St-Germain: Nicolas Ouédec ersetzte Xavier Gravelaine. Damit verschoben sich die Stärken innerhalb der Mannschaft. Wurde Gassets Equipe zuvor wegen seiner Angriffskraft gefürchtet, so war sie in der Folge ausgeglichener und defensiv stabiler. Der 3:0-Sieg im letzten Saisonspiel war übrigens der erste im heimischen Stade de la Mosson nach sechs Monaten ohne Vollerfolg. Starker Mann im Verein ist der Industrielle Louis Nicollin. Der Gründer und heutige Präsident beeindruckt nicht nur durch sein Äusseres. Aus der Fussballschule stossen immer wieder neue Nachwuchsspieler nach, die von den Grossklubs alsbald abgeworben werden.
