The proletarian club from the 13th precinct of Budapest is still dreaming of the glorious sixties, when they won four championships within six seasons. Their last appearance in a European Competition, however, goes back twelve years. After their best result in a long time, they fell back again to sixth rank this year, although they played a respectacle second half of the season. Too many goals conceded and the moody style cost coach Imre Gellei the job. Not even the fighting spirit, for which Vasas is famous, could change that fact. Thus, the former midfielder and assistant Andras Komjati gets a chance as the head coach. In 1981, he played his only game with the national team, when Hungary lost to England 1:3. The greatest talents next to the many experienced players are the strikers Thomas Sowunmi and Zoltan Pal. Sowunmi, son of a Nigerian father and a Hungarian mother, is about to play his first game with the national team. The top scorers are Pal and Ferenc Hamori; last season they scored almost half of the goals. The new coach is clear about the system he wants to play: one sweeper, three defenders, four midfielders and two strikers. -ba

Der Arbeiterklub aus dem 13. Bezirk Budapests träumt noch immer von den glorreichen 60er Jahren mit vier Meistertiteln in sechs Spielzeiten. Der letzte Auftritt im Europacup liegt zwölf Jahre zurück. Der besten Plazierung seit langem folgte in diesem Sommer trotz einer ansprechenden Rückrunde mit Rang 6 wieder ein Rückschritt. Zuviele Gegentore und die launische Spielweise seines Teams brachten Trainer Imre Gellei um die Stelle. Da nützte auch der Kampfgeist Vasas nichts, der die Mannschaft auszeichnete. Der einstige Aufbauer und bisherige Assistent Andras Komjati kommt so zu seiner ersten Chance als Headcoach. Er hatte 1981 gegen England sein einziges Länderspiel (1:3) bestritten. Neben vielen Routiniers verfügen die Stürmer Thomas Sowunmi und Zoltan Pal über das grösste Talent. Sowunmi, Sohn eines Nigerianers und einer Ungarin, steht vor dem Sprung in die Nationalmannschaft. Pal und Ferenc Hamori schossen letzte Saison zusammen fast die Hälfte aller Tore. Klare Absichten äussert der neue Coach betreffend Taktik. Sein Team wird mit einem Libero, drei Verteidigern, vier Mittelfeldspielern und zwei Stürmern spielen. -lb
