Behind Shamrock and Dundalk, Shelbourne are the third force in Ireland. 30 years after their last title, they finally won the championship again in 1992, but the series of success everybody had hoped for did not happen, except for the cup, where they continued to play successfully. A year ago, Shelbourne lost their last game of the season to Dundalk 1:2; a tie would have won them the championship. After that, Dermot Keely was named coach. In the first leg of the pre-qualification to the UEFA cup in 1998/99, Shelbourne was about to realise their most prestigious victory ever, when they were 3:0 ahead of the Glasgow Rangers, but the Scots managed to score five times in the last 30 minutes. Their only (former) international is central defender Pat Scully, who was elected the team's Player of the Year last season, whereas Stephen Geoghegan was the top scorer of the "National League" four times in the last five years. -ba
Shelbourne ist hinter Shamrock und Dundalk die dritte Kraft in der Republik. 1992 gewann man nach 30 Jahren Unterbruch erstmals wieder die Meisterschaft. Der Aufbruch zur erhofften Erfolgsserie blieb aber aus. Einzig im Cup war Shelbourne anschliessend weiter erfolgreich. Vor Jahresfrist unterlagen die Dubliner in der letzten Runde Dundalk 1:2; schon ein Punkt hätte zum Meistertitel gereicht. Dermot Keely wurde daraufhin zum Trainer bestellt. Im Hinspiel der Vorqualifikation zum UEFA-Cup 1998/99 stand Shelbourne beim Stand von 3:0 gegen die Glasgow Rangers vor dem prestigeträchtigsten Triumph der Vereinsgeschichte, doch die Schotten erzielten in den letzten 30 Minuten noch fünf Tore. Einziger (Ex-)Internationaler ist Innenverteidiger Pat Scully, der letzte Saison zu Shelbournes Spieler des Jahres gekürt wurde. Stephen Geoghegan wurde in den letzten fünf Jahren viermal Torschützenkönig der "National League". –lb.
