Between 1992 and 1996 Akranes won the last five of their 17 championships in a row; only Fram Reykjavik tops this record, but it happened in the pioneering times of Icelandic football. Football has traditionally had a great importance in the small town of Akranes. In their 20 appearances in a European Competition, however, IA made it only five times to the second round. Since the Bosman ruling, the club keep losing their leading players to foreign clubs. Coach Logi Olafsson, who coached the national team up to summer 1997, has Akranes play a solid flat back four. The young, talented goalkeeper Gunnarsson and the former international players Jonsson (formerly Motherwell und Örebro), Gudjonsson and the versatile captain Högnason form the backbone of the team. In order to strengthen their attack, Akranes borrow the leading goal-scorer Eyjolfsson from Walsall up to July. Last season, he was a major factor in Walsall's promotion to 1. Division. -ba

Zwischen 1992 und 1996 heimste Akranes die fünf letzten seiner bisher 17 Meistertitel in Serie ein. Nur Fram Reykjavik hatte es in der Pionierzeit des isländischen Fussballs noch besser gemacht. In der Kleinstadt hat der Fussball traditionsgemäss eine grosse Bedeutung. In 20 Europacup-Teilnahmen überstand IA lediglich fünfmal eine Runde. Seit dem Bosman-Urteil verloren die Isländer ihre Leistungsträger regelmässig an ausländische Klubs. Unter Logi Olafsson, der bis zum Sommer 1997 die Nationalmannschaft unter sich hatte, spielt Akranes aus einer soliden Viererverteidigung heraus. Der junge, talentierte Goalie Gunnarsson und die einstigen Internationalen Jonsson (ex-Motherwell und Örebro), Gudjonsson und der vielseitige Captain Högnason bilden das Gerippe der Mannschaft. Um den Angriff zu verstärken, hat Akranes Topskorer Eyjolfsson bis im Juli von Walsall Juli ausgeliehen. Er hatte vergangene Saison massgeblichen Anteil am Aufstieg der Engländer in die 1.
