After winning three championships in four seasons, Juventus are trying to avoid by the UEFA Intertoto Cup what had never happened since 1970/71: a season without any European appearance. There were many reasons for the disappointing sixth rank: Alessandro Del Piero's injury, the insufficient performance by schemer Zinedine Zidane or the poor atmosphere between coach Marcello Lippi and some of the pillars in the team. From November on Del Piero did not play any more due to his torn knee ligaments, and Zidane, the World's Footballer of the Year, had a hard time recovering from the World Cup and had small injuries every again and again. "If I am the problem, I resign", said Lippi and did it. Since then the team has been coached by Carlo Ancelotti. Gründe für den enttäuschenden 6. Rang gab es viele: der Ausfall von Alessandro Del Piero, die ungenügenden Leistungen von Regisseur Zinedine Zidane oder das verlorene Feeling zwischen Trainer Marcello Lippi und einigen Leistungsträgern. Del Piero fiel ab November wegen eines Kreuzbandrisses aus. Zidane, Weltfussballer des Jahres 1998, kam nach der Weltmeisterschaft nur langsam auf Touren und war immer wieder leicht verletzt. "Wenn ich das Problem bin, dann gehe ich," sagte Lippi im Januar und trat zurück. Seither wird das Team von Carlo Ancelotti betreut. Auf die neue Saison hin übernahmen die Turiner von Bari Aufbauer Gianluca Zambrotta. Der Neo-Internationale gilt in Italien neben Francesco Totti als das grösste Talent.
