Business as usual: Perugia Calcio suffered through turbulent times again this past season. After a mediocre start the wilful president Luciano Gaucci fired coach Ilario Castagner, who had lead the club to the promotion to the highest league a year before. He was replaced by the legendary Vujadin Boskov. Under his coaching, the club from Umbria were not safe from relegation up to the last minute. For the upcoming season Carlo Mazzone, who missed the UEFA Cup final only by a hair's breadth with Bologna this spring, has taken the difficult job in Perugia. The star of the team is Hidetoshi Nakata from Japan, who had an excellent first season in Serie A. The club have a number of interesting offers for the ten times goal scorer, thus his future has not been decided yet. For the sum of 7,5 million Swiss Franks Juan Jaime Kaviedes from Ecuador joined the Umbrian team. Perugia will play a number of friendly games in Japan this summer so that they will hardly line up their best team in the UIC. -ba
Alles wie gehabt: Auch in der vergangenen Saison durchlebte Perugia Calcio turbulente Zeiten. Nach einem mittelmässigen Start entliess der eigenwillige Präsident Luciano Gaucci Trainer Ilario Castagner. Castagner hatte den Verein im Jahr zuvor in die höchste Spielklasse zurückgeführt. An seine Stelle trat Trainerlegende Vujadin Boskov. Unter dem Jugoslawen mussten die Umbrier bis zuletzt um den Klassenerhalt bangen. In der kommenden Spielzeit übernimmt nun Carlo Mazzone, der dieses Frühjahr mit Bologna den Final im UEFA-Cup ganz knapp verpasste, das schwierige Amt in Perugia. Für die spielerischen Akzente im Team ist der Japaner Hidetoshi Nakata besorgt, dem seine erste Saison in der Serie A hervorragend gelang. Dem Klub liegen einige interessante Offerten für den zehnfachen Torschützen vor. Seine fussballerische Zukunft stand anfangs Juni noch nicht fest. Der Ekuadorianer Juan Jaime Kaviedes stiess im Januar für rund 7,5 Millionen Schweizer Franken zu den Umbriern. Perugia wird im Sommer einige Freundschaftsspiele in Japan absolvieren. Den Intertoto-Cup wird die Mannschaft deshalb kaum in Bestbesetzung in Angriff nehmen. -sw
