After merging Venta with Nafta, Ventspils FK were promoted by the authorities to Virsliga in 1996. The harbour town assuring the most important connection from Lithuania to Russia, is a boom town, from which also the clubs profit. Apart from FC, the basketball team, too, play on a European level for the first time. There is even enough money to build a new stadium, which will, however, not be finished before August. Thus, Ventspils will play their UEFA Intertoto games in the capital Riga, 180 km away. Apart from the internationals Victor Lukashevich and Nickolay Polyakov, the Ventspils squad includes three U21 players, namely Edgar Kvashnin, Valery Borovkov and Andrey Vanius. Goalkeeper Vanius is only 18 years old. The roster also shows the names of Janis Rinkus and Gintaras Rimkus, but both of them are not relatives of the famous Vitas Rimkus. Michael Bestschastnich, however, is indeed the brother of Vladimir, who is playing football in Spain. Coach Boris Sinicen, who once played with Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk from the Russian second league, has the team play efficient pressing, thus providing an entertaining attacking game. -ba

Nach der Fusion zwischen Venta und Nafta Ventspils stieg FK 1996 am Grünen Tisch in die Virsliga auf. Die Hafenstadt, die die wichtigste Schiffsverbindung Lettlands zu Russland sicherstellt, befindet sich in Expansion. Davon profitieren die Sportvereine. Neben dem FC spielt auch die Basketball-Mannschaft erstmals auf europäischem Parkett. Die Investitionen reichten sogar für einen Stadionneubau aus, der aber erst im August fertiggestellt wird. Deshalb muss Ventspils seine Partien des UEFA-Intertoto-Cups in der 180 km entfernten Hauptstadt Riga austragen Im Kader von Ventspils stehen neben den Nationalspielern Victor Lukashevich und Nickolay Polyakov auch die drei U21-Spieler Edgar Kvashnin, Valery Borovkov und Andrey Vanius. Torhüter Vanius ist erst 18jährig. In der Mannschaftsliste sind weiters die Namen Janis Rinkus und Gintaras Rimkus aufgeführt, beide nicht verwandt mit dem prominenten Vitas Rimkus. Michael Bestschastnich dagegen ist der Bruder von Vladimir, der sein Geld in Spanien verdient. Unter Trainer Boris Sinicen, der einst beim russischen Zweitligisten Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk spielte, zeigt Ventspils dank effizientem Pressing unterhaltsamen Angriffsfussball. -lb
