At the beginning of the 20th century, Serbs and Bulgarians were fighting over Macedonia, which became a republic of Yugoslavia after World War II. Neighbouring Greece always contested the independence which was declared in 1991, but it was internationally recognised two years later. The country, where tens of thousands of refugees from Kosovo have found shelter these past weeks, has developped their football considerably lately. Many players who play abroad helped the national team to startling results. In 1. Division there are seven teams from Skopje, which is not only the political but also the commercial and cultural center of the country. Cementarnica, which fall behind Sloga Jugomagnat and Vardar in terms of interest among the fans, draw only an average attendance of 1,000. Former goalkeeper Alekso Mackov has his team mostly play a 3-5-2-system. Emir Demir, the schemer in midfield, recently premiered in the national team, after having been sidelined for a long time due to an injury. Their best scorer is Blagoja Milevski (ten goals last season), who complements perfectly assiduous Zanko Savov in attack. Defender Goran Dimitrovski plays with the U21 selection. -ba

Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts stritten sich Serben und Bulgaren um Mazedonien, das nach dem 2. Weltkrieg eine Republik Jugoslawiens wurde. Nachbar Griechenland bestritt wegen des Namens seit jeher Mazedoniens Unabhängigkeit, welche die Stimmbürger 1991 beschlossen hatten. Diese wurde zwei Jahre später international anerkannt. Der Zufluchtsort von Zehntausenden von Kosovo-Albanern hat sich fussballerisch in den letzten Monaten stark entwickelt. Die vielen Söldner verhalfen der Nationalmannschaft zu beachtlichen Resultaten. In der 1. Division spielen sieben Teams aus Skopje, das nicht nur das politische, sondern auch das wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Zentrum des Landes ist. Cementarnica, das in der Gunst der Bevölkerung hinter Sloga Jugomagnat und Vardar liegt, zieht nur etwa 1'000 Zuschauer zu seinen Heimspielen an. Der frühere Goalie Alekso Mackov stellt sein Team meistens im 3-5-2-System auf. Emir Demir, der Leader im Mittelfeld, feierte kürzlich sein Debüt in der Landesauswahl, nachdem er lange verletzt ausgefallen war.
