Only one year ago Newry Town were promoted to Premier Division, the highest league in Northern Ireland. Driven by this success, they had an excellent first season in the top league, finishing fourth. Thus, the UIC will be the first international test for the team from the small town (population 20,000) close to the border to the Irish Republic. Unfortunately, the team had to pay a high price for this qualification: during the away game against last year's champion Cliftonville in the last but one round, goalkeeper Paul Straney suffered a double fracture of his leg. The team will hardly be able to cope with this loss, as they have not even found an equally strong substitute for the experienced goalkeeper. The team's other weak point is the midfield; the technical problems of the midfielders will be punished by any international opponent. -ba
Erst vor einem Jahr gelang dem Team von Newry Town der Aufstieg in die höchste nordirische Spielklasse, die Premier Division. Beflügelt durch diesen Erfolg gelang der Mannschaft eine starke erste Saison im Oberhaus, welche auf dem vierten Platz beendet wurde. Der UI-Cup wird somit zur ersten internationalen Prüfung für den Klub aus der 20'000 Einwohner zählenden Stadt nahe der Grenze zur Republik Irland. Leider aber musste das Team für diese Qualifikation einen teuren Preis zahlen: Beim Auswärtsspiel gegen den abtretenden Meister Cliftonville in der zweitletzten Runde zog sich Torhüter Paul Straney einen doppelten Beinbruch zu. Diesen Substanzverlust wird die Mannschaft von Spielertrainer John McDonall kaum verkraften, zumal noch kein gleichwertiger Ersatz für den routinierten Schlussmann gefunden werden konnte. Schwachpunkt des Teams ist das Mittelfeld, dessen technische Mängel sich im internationalen Vergleich bemerkbar machen werden. -sw
