From 1986 on, Vålerenga's performances stagnated despite great support by the public. Two years ago, however, the club came alive through the cup win against Drammen (4:2). In the Cupwinners' Cup they reached the quarter final after winning over Rapid Bucharest and Besiktas Istanbul, where they lost 0:3/2:3 to Chelsea London. The start into the new season was hampered by the announcement of coach Egil Olsen's departure. He was the coach of Norway's national team, when they qualified for the 1994 (for the first time in 56 years) and 1998 World Cups. After France 98, where the Scandinavians lost to Italy 0:1 in the round of the last 16, he left the Association after 20 years of work for Oslo. But now, having signed with Wimbledon, he is the first Norwegian to become a coach in the Premier League. At least the two strikers Pascal Simpson (SWE) and John Carew remain with Vålerenga. In 1997 Simpson scored both goals for AIK Stockholm in the quarter final of the Cupwinners' Cup against Barcelona (1:3, 1:1). In winter, the tall John Carew was sought after by Bologna. Knut Henry Haraldsen and Fredrik Kjoelner, the two central defenders, are strong in the air and sturdy. The Finnish goalkeeper Mikko Juhani Kaven was ousted by Oyvind Bolthof, who came from the third league and made it to the U21-selection immediately. The team bridge midfield quickly with long passes from defence. -ba
-lb
