In former Yugoslavia, Velenje from second division was Slovenia's third force behind Olimpija Ljubljana and Maribor. In the fall, president Janko Lukner foresaw another disappointing season for his club, which caused him to call Branko Oblak, who was a legendary schemer in 46 games with the national team; no other player from Slovenia had ever played so many games. He was also the hero of many a success with Hajduk Split in the European Competitions. And Velenje finished strongly indeed. The young players' lack of experience actually kept them from winning the championship. Captain and goalkeeper Mladen Dabanovic, in great form all through the season, avoided many goals, which won him the call to the national team. Recently, newly international Zoran Pavlovic refused an offer by Hajduk Split. The eight times scorer is said to have signed a contract with Croatia Zagreb, which is contested by the Slovak Football Association. The best defender is U21-player Samir Balagic. Rudar rely on a defensive interpretation of the 3-5-2-system, as they have difficulties in dominating the opponent. Velenje has 16,000 inhabitants, who make a living off of the mines. -ba
-lb
