Having played in the third division in 1994, the club from the industrial and cultural center on the border to the Czech Republic were promoted to the top league two years ago. Finishing fourth and fifth, they immediately reached results behind the top three. An important part was played by national striker Martin Fabus, who came out of the juniors department of Slovan Bratislava. He finished second and first in the scorer list, scoring 16 and 19 goals respectively. The 23 year old is already being watched by foreign clubs. Fabus is strong in the air, technically skilled with both feet, and he has a particular knack for scoring. In the summer of 1998 Robert Paldan, only 28 years old, was made head coach, after having been assistant coach to Stanislav Griga, whose work Paldan continued to the management's satisfaction. He has his team play offensively. A year ago the Slovaks were eliminated by Kaliningrad (0:0, 0:1) from Russia in the second round of the UEFA Intertoto Cup. -ba
Der Verein aus dem Wirtschafts- und Kulturzentrum an der Grenze zu Tschechien war 1994 noch drittklassig und stieg vor zwei Jahren in die höchste Liga auf. Mit einem 4. und 5. Rang hat sich Trencin sofort hinter der Spitzengruppe etabliert. Massgeblichen Anteil daran hatte Nationalstürmer Martin Fabus, ein Element aus der Juniorenabteilung Slovan Bratislavas. Er belegte mit 16 und 19 Treffern die Ränge 2 und 1 in der Torschützenliste. Bereits haben viele ausländische Klubs ihr Interesse am 23jährigen angemeldet. Fabus ist kopfballstark, beidfüssig und verfügt über einen ausgeprägten Torriecher. Im Sommer 1998 wurde der erst 28jährige Robert Paldan zum Cheftrainer befördert, nachdem er zuvor Assistent von Stanislav Griga war. Paldan hat dessen Arbeit zur Zufriedenheit der Vereinsleitung fortgeführt. Er lässt sein Team mit einer offensiven Grundeinstellung antreten. Vor Jahresfrist schieden die Slowaken in der 2. Runde des UEFA-Intertoto-Cups gegen das russische Team von Kaliningrad aus (0:0, 0:1). -sw
