The railway junction Zilina is located on the Vag river between Poland and the Czech Republic. Textile industry, wood working and machine building generate considerable income for the city in the north of Slovakia. MSK Zilina had been playing for 31 years in the highest league of Czechoslovakia. In 1961 they won the regional Slovak Cup and reached the final of the Czechoslovakian Cup. Winning their home game 3:2 in the second round of the European Cupwinners' Cup, they were, nevertheless, eliminated by Fiorentina. Since Slovakia's independence they reached the cup semi finals five times, but could never get to the final so far. Jozef Barmos, who had won a bronze medal with the national team in the European Championship 1980, replaced coach Anton Janos for the upcoming season, because Janos had failed to reach fourth rank and left for Sparta Trnava. The Zilina squad has ten players who had already joined the club, when they were juniors, but of course they lack experience. The outstanding player ist midfielder Marek Mintal, who scored eleven goals last season, but in general the strikers do not yet have the knack of scoring. -ba
Das Eisenbahnzentrum Zilina liegt zwischen Polen und Tschechien am Fluss Vag. Textil-Industrie, Holzverarbeitung, Papierfabrikation und Maschinenbau lassen es den Nordslowaken wohl ergehen. MSK Zilina spielte 31 Jahre in der höchsten Liga der Tschechoslowakei. 1961 gewann es den regionalen slowakischen Cup und stand im Cupfinal der Tschechoslowakei. Im Cup der Cupsieger schied man anschliessend trotz eines 3:2-Sieges im Hinspiel der 2. Runde gegen Fiorentina aus. Seit der Eigenständigkeit der Slowakei erreichte Zilina fünfmal den Cup-Halbfinal, ohne je ins Endspiel vorzustossen. Jozef Barmos, der an der EM 1980 als Spieler die Bronzemedaille gewonnen hatte, löste auf die Saison 1999/2000 hin Anton Janos als Trainer ab. Janos hatte den angestrebten 4. Rang verfehlt und heuerte bei Sparta Trnava an. Im Kader Zilinas befinden sich zehn Spieler, die schon als Junioren dem Verein angehörten. Noch geht der jungen Mannschaft die nötige Erfahrung ab. Herausragender Spieler ist der Aufbauer Marek Mintal (22), der letzte Saison elf Tore erzielte. Den Stürmern fehlt beim Torschuss und in der Ballbehandlung die Klasse. -lb
