Two years ago, they celebrated the greatest success the club from the city of Izmit 100 km away from Istanbul ever had: they won the cup final 1:0 against Trabzonspor. Kocaelispor finished the past season on fifth rank just like the previous one, which fulfilled their expectations, although only five of the 17 opponents scored fewer goals than Kocaelispor. The squad includes five foreign players: apart from the team pillars Roman Dabrowski and Misko Mirkovic they are Goannes Sawieh from Liberia as well as Ahmed Hassan and Ahmed Methat from Egypt. Coach Güvenc Kurtar favours a strong defence and quick counter-attacks, as Dabrowski from Poland is a very fast striker. The defence is hold together by the experienced sweeper and team captain Misko Mirkovic. Last year, the former Yugoslav took Turkish citizenship. The team's greatest weakness is their inconsistency. After winning gloriously against the top teams, they may unexpectedly lose to weaker opponents. -ba
Den grössten Erfolg feierte der Verein aus der 100 km östlich von Istanbul gelegenen Stadt Izmit vor zwei Jahren, als man im Cupfinal Trabzonspor 1:0 bezwang. Die Saison 1998/99 beendete Kocaelispor wie im Vorjahr auf Rang 5, was in etwa den Erwartungen entsprach. Dies obwohl von den 17 Gegnern nur fünf noch weniger Tore schossen. Im Kader der Türken stehen fünf ausländische Spieler. Neben den Teamstützen Roman Dabrowski und Misko Mirkovic sind dies der Liberianer Goannes Sawieh sowie die Ägypter Ahmed Hassan und Ahmed Methat. Trainer Güvenc Kurtar setzt auf eine starke Abwehr und lässt mit Gegenstössen operieren; nicht zuletzt, weil der Pole Dabrowski dank seiner Schnelligkeit ein klassischer Konterstürmer ist. Die Verteidigung wird vom routinierten Libero und Captain Misko Mirkovic dirigiert. Der Jugoslawe hat im vergangenen Jahr auch die türkische Staatsbürgerschaft angenommen.
